A multi-vendor e-commerce store with payments and inventory

How we would take a marketplace idea from a catalogue and checkout to vendor onboarding, payments and stock control.

A look at how Grocito approaches launching a multi-vendor online store: the usual challenge, our approach and what to expect.

Challenge

A business that wants to sell products from several vendors needs more than a shop template. Each vendor needs to manage its own catalogue and orders, customers expect a fast and trustworthy checkout, payments have to be split and reconciled correctly, and stock levels must stay accurate across channels. The team also needs to launch in stages so the first version earns feedback quickly.

Our approach

We split the work into a launch release and a growth release, so the essentials ship first.

  • Storefront and catalogue. Product pages, search and filters, categories, variants and media, designed mobile-first and built for speed and search visibility.
  • Vendor portal. Vendors sign up, are reviewed by an admin, then manage their products, prices, stock and orders.
  • Checkout and payments. A single cart across vendors, regional payment methods, tax handling, order confirmation emails and refunds.
  • Payouts and commissions. Rules for marketplace commission with a clear ledger for each vendor.
  • Inventory. Stock updates on every order and return, low-stock alerts and optional sync with an external inventory tool.
  • Operations. An admin console for orders, disputes, vendor approvals and content, with audit trails.
  • Delivery. Staged releases, load and checkout testing, analytics set up before launch and a post-launch monitoring period.

Solution

We build on our E-Commerce & Storefront Platform and connect it to an Inventory & Supply Chain Management Tool when stock needs to be managed in more than one place. Custom modules handle the vendor workflows and payout rules specific to the client. The wider engagement draws on our E-commerce Solutions service, covering design, integrations and search optimisation, so the store can be found as well as used.

What to expect

A marketplace built this way typically gives the owner one place to run catalogue, orders and vendors, and gives vendors a self-service way to sell without waiting on staff. A clear payout ledger tends to reduce reconciliation work and disputes. Performance and search work aims to keep the storefront fast and discoverable. Exact results depend on the products, traffic and the vendors you bring on.

Technology

  • Next.js and React for the storefront
  • Node.js, TypeScript and Laravel options for backend services
  • Stripe, Razorpay and PayPal for payments
  • PostgreSQL and Redis for data and caching
  • Shopify or WooCommerce where a hosted store is a better fit
  • Google Analytics and Search Console for measurement
  • Cloudflare for delivery and security
